Umlazi Mega City

This visionary and landmark retail development by M2PM, is strategically located at the gateway to Umlazi and directly opposite Durban’s existing International Airport. Because of its high visibility and the excellent catchment area, the centre attracts cosmopolitan consumers but its main purpose has been to serve the local community .

The Mega City  has provided a much needed critical mass of quality retail outlets for the residents of Umlazi. However, a number of other laudable economic and empowerment objectives have also been met by the creation of jobs, careers and business opportunities enabling the transfer of skills and providing a secure and stable platform for continued development and growth in this previously-disadvantaged area.

Constructed on a flat 163,000 m² Site, the 32,802 m², 100 shop Mega City is anchored by a Super Spar and Woolworth's and provides a well-balanced tenant mix, which incorporates other well known Nationals, Banks and Restaurants. Doctors’ rooms, a “one-stop” Metro Service Centre combined with a vibrant collection of local traders, completing the centre, are a free standing Hirsch’s Home Store of 3,000 m² and a Caltex Service Station. Because of its popularity, a Phase II Motor City, commencing in January 2009, is to be developed and will consist of a Fitment Centre, Motor Spares, Sound Specialist and Motor Showrooms.

From day 1, Mega City has involved the entire community – from local Taxi Associations, Durban Metro local Councilors and businesses, schools and churches. As a result, and being a safe, clean, well managed shopping centre, Umlazi Mega City has gained the consistent patronage of the local community. Furthermore, the Centre Owner - SA Corporate Real Estate Fund - is negotiating the sale of a 25% stake to an investment company whose shareholders and beneficiaries will be the people of Umlazi.
